Pickleball is a fun and easy-to-learn sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. Here are the basic steps for playing pickleball:
-
Equipment: You'll need a pickleball paddle, a pickleball, and a net. Pickleball paddles are similar to oversized table tennis paddles, and the ball is similar to a whiffle ball. You can play indoors or outdoors, but make sure you have a court with the proper dimensions (20 feet wide by 44 feet long for doubles, and 20 feet wide by 22 feet long for singles).
-
Serving: The game starts with a serve. The server must stand behind the baseline and hit the ball diagonally across the net, into the opponent's service box. The serve must be underhand and the paddle must make contact with the ball below the waist.
-
Return: After the serve, the receiving team must let the ball bounce once on their side before hitting it back over the net. Once the ball has bounced, both teams can hit the ball in the air or after it bounces. The ball must stay within the boundaries of the court and cannot be hit out of bounds.
-
Rally: The game continues with back-and-forth rallies, with each team trying to hit the ball in such a way that the opposing team cannot return it. Players can hit the ball in the air or after it bounces, but they cannot hit the ball while standing in the non-volley zone (also known as the kitchen) unless the ball has bounced first. A rally ends when one team fails to return the ball, hits the ball out of bounds, or commits a fault.
-
Scoring: Points are scored only by the serving team, and the first team to reach 11 points (with a 2-point lead) wins the game. If the score is tied at 10-10, the game continues until one team wins by two points.
-
Switching Sides: After each game, players switch sides of the court.
-
Doubles vs. Singles: Pickleball can be played with two or four players. In doubles play, each team has two players, and they must alternate hitting the ball. In singles play, each player plays alone on the court and serves diagonally from the right-hand side of the court.
Pickleball is a great way to stay active and have fun with friends and family. Once you get the hang of the basic rules and techniques, you'll be ready to enjoy this exciting and fast-paced sport.
